CS2 Silent Reload Toggle and AUG Reload Changes: What Valve Changed in October
Short version: On 28 October 2026 Valve added an option to switch Silent Reload Mode between Hold and Toggle. Earlier in the month the AUG reload got half a second faster and several silent reload bugs and exploits were fixed.
The 28 October change: Hold or Toggle
Until now a silent reload meant holding the reload button the whole time. The newest update adds a setting to switch between Hold and Toggle. With Toggle on, once the silent reload starts you can let go of the reload button. If you change your mind and want a fast reload instead, tap the reload button again to cancel.
The same update fixed various cases where the first sound of a reload was still audible even though you had asked for a silent one. Valve did not say where the new option lives in the menus, so look through the game settings.
The fixes that came first
The toggle sits on top of a month of tidy-ups. In order:
- 24 September: fixed a case where tapping reload before holding it gave a slightly faster silent reload, and a case where silent reload could be used to fire shotguns faster than normal.
- 25 September: fixed some cases where loud reloads persisted while you were trying to stealth reload.
- 8 October: fixed the sound event during silent reload for the Desert Eagle.
AUG reload: half a second faster
On 8 October Valve reduced the AUG reload time by half a second. On 14 October the standing and crouch reload animations were updated to match the new duration. If you had written the AUG off for its reload, this is the patch to try it again.
Should you switch to Toggle?
It depends on your hands. If holding a key through a reload bothers you, Toggle removes that. The trade-off is one more thing to remember: a second tap cancels back to a fast reload. A practice server is the safe place to build the habit before you use it in a real match.
If you report players
